When people take themselves too seriously, life is in danger of getting very boring. This is a problem the ladies at Queen of the Castle Magazine do not have. Everyone needs some whimsy in their lives, at least that’s what the writers of Queen of the Castle Magazine think. In fact, that is their motto and theme of their magazine: celebrating women and life through whimsy. Shannon Crotty, who experienced a period of disconnection from the Eau Claire community when she first moved here, brought Queen of the Castle Magazine to life in 2007. Wanting the community of women to feel connected, the Queen of the Castle Magazine focuses on the positives of life: people, motivation, and fun jokes.

Shannon Crotty, along with the five other women who drive Queen of the Castle Magazine, decided their publication could use another step: a monthly talk show. Yes, that’s right. The Glow Talk Show has been born and the first episode will air in June. Each episode will be recorded in front of a live audience of about 100 people at the Eau Claire Children’s theater and edited later. The audience will enjoy surprises, treats, and plenty of fun jokes. There will be a different guest each month who will determine each theme. Several different segments of each show will feature entertainment such as live music, speakers, games, and the five creative women behind Queen of the Castle Magazine talking, all centering around creating a fun life full of whimsy.

“What would whimsy do? ... Start a talk show that plays good-natured jokes on people and find reasons to celebrate life.” – Shannon Crotty on The Glow Talk Show

The theme of the first episode is supposed to be about letting whimsy create joy in your life. It features Tess Morgan, the well-known broadcaster on The Mix 98.1 radio station. On top of that, the mischievous women of Queen of the Castle surprised everyone, by switching the entire focus of the show and discussing surprised host Kris Erickson’s upcoming wedding. They also served dessert, a luscious wedding cake, to everyone, including the audience. The next episode, airing in July, welcomes Sarah Stokes from WEAU who is expecting and the theme will be family.

Shannon Crotty feels that this talk show will help locals connect more deeply with each other and help introduce more sporadic fun into people’s lives. She allows whimsy to play a large role in her own life.

“What would whimsy do?” asked Crotty. “I think whimsy would start a talk show that plays good-natured jokes on people and find reasons to celebrate life.”

Crotty and her friends at Queen of the Castle Magazine are already known for their ability to bring fun into their lives. At a past conference, Shannon and the other women from Queen of the Castle picked one random woman out of the crowd. They chose a pretend name for her and announced that it was her birthday. She was very confused when people kept wishing her a happy birthday and calling her a different name. However, by the end of the day, the whole conference was singing her happy birthday and everyone was feasting on birthday cake while the pretend birthday girl opened a pile of gifts. Everyone was laughing by the end, including the surprised birthday girl. It seems like the more time you spend around these ladies, the higher the chances of laughing and eating something tasty. Who wouldn’t want to hang out with these ladies?
