“When my wife was pregnant, our overall baby theme was owls. After painting our nursery I became obsessed with owls for a little bit – prompting this piece. It was fun because I don’t usually paint wildlife. I usually paint dumb stuff like skulls and zombie chicks.”  – The Artist

What we were thinking: "As a local tattoo artist, Jed Leiknes has used his knowledge of high contrast renderings, along with varying brush stroke techniques, to render this mysterious and deep painting. If you look within the eyes of the owl you will notice very stark, rich blacks with brilliant strokes of white highlights. This stark contrast in the tones provides a three dimensional and realistic eye shape. Surrounding the eyes are brilliant white sockets that fade to a flurry of colors. This presentation generates a dramatic viewing experience. Jed has created a unique texture for the feathers by tapering the brush strokes with heavy, non-diluted ink. As the photo fades out away from the center of the beak, the strokes get more airy and fluffy. This added effect creates an nice focal point on the tip of the bird's face, drawing the viewer in." V1 Designer Josh Smeltzer
