The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales
The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales by Jon Scieszka is a delightfully absurd collection of Mother Goose parodies published in 1992. Twenty years later, the zany children’s stories are still being told – this time onstage. How can they adapt such delightfully ludicrous children’s tales into a live theater production? “They’re just that good,” says State Theatre executive director Ben Richgruber of Griffin Theatre Company, the Chicago-based company behind the production. Griffin has performed several times before at the State Theatre, always drawing a good crowd, said Richgruber. Stinky Cheese Man is expected to be no different, as the play, aimed at children ages 4 to 10, is expected to bring out elementary school students as well as their parents and teachers. The show is part of the State Theatre’s School Matinee Series, a yearly series of shows aimed at different school-aged groups. The hour-long play will be presented at 10am Feb. 8 at the State Theatre. Tickets are $5 for students and $8 for adults; call 832-ARTS for tickets.
