Frozen River Film Festival
sizable regional film festival just a short drive away
For the eighth year, the Frozen River Film Fest will take place January 25-29 in Winona, at Winona State University. The festival will feature more than 40 films and documentaries as well as live music, workshops, and free activities for kids. One film that has festival director Crystal Hegge really excited is Dakota 38. The documentary portrays the mass execution of 38 Dakota Native Americans in Mankato, MN. This showing (Jan. 29) will be the film’s world premiere and is free to everyone. Another is Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for Our Time, a film about the famous environmentalist who lived on a farm in Baraboo for most of his life. Performing at the festival in conjunction with the Fringe Friday Festival is Minneapolis based punk/glam rock group All the Pretty Horses. Workshops include “Carp, the Eatable Fish,” “Core Values and History of Civil Disobedience,” “Natural Building,” and “Rewilding at Home.” A lunch buffet will take place on Saturday and Sunday and there will be a dinner buffet on Saturday evening. With many locations throughout campus, film showings, concerts, and workshops will be held at different times and places for the duration of the festival. A full schedule and list of films can be found at the festival’s website www.frff.org.
