Painted Saints' Pen Tune About Water Street

Chris Macheichok |

If you’re looking for a new sound to experience – perhaps one described with terms like spaghetti western, gutter blues, sad chamber folk, and retro spy shoegazer – look no further than Painted Saints. The Minneapolis-based group (with former Eau Clairian Paul Fonfara) surpasses any single genre on their new album, No Match For Greater Minds – combining the more traditional stylings of country, folk, and blues and layering it with strings and choirs. The nine-track album contains dramatic moments, as well as sobered and downtrodden ones, to give the impression of a soundtrack to a majestic dream. Listeners should look for the local shout-out on the song The Water Street Waltz, an anthem about watching silt collect in the Eau Claire River. This is their third album, and with a darker outlook than anything previous. Perfectly suited to get you through the doldrums of winter.
