After Brandon Buchanan left his seat on Eau Claire City Council a few years back to pursue a degree in law from Marquette University, Eau Claire lawyer Dana Wachs came in. And now it appears they’re hinting at running for the same state assembly seat in 2012. But the announcement is anything but official. In case you’re not familiar with Buchanan, he was a UWEC student highly active in politics, and even ran for city council when he was still enrolled. The openly liberal Democrat got elected two years later (in 2006) as a 23 year-old (the youngest councilman ever). Wachs is likewise a Democrat, and practices law (he got his degree from Marquette) for the firm Richie, Wickstrom & Wachs. Both announcements say they’ve formed exploratory committees to run for the 91st State Assembly. So they’ll be talking to area residents, essentially to see they’re interest in voting for them and/or helping their campaigns. If you’re not wowed by their similarities yet, also consider that they’ve both said they’re running to help undo the damage Scott Walker has done as governor. Expect their “official” announcements in the coming weeks, but we’re guessing they’re pretty prepared to enter the ring.
