Autumn is upon us, and if you’re like me, you’re eager to get outside and enjoy the brisk weather and changing colors of the season. Fall also means back-to-school, but it doesn’t have to mean the end of outdoor fun. Here’s some awesome tips for you, and your little ones, on how to take advantage of the lovely weather before breaking out the dreaded mittens and stocking hats. Plus side: almost all of these are either local tips, or better yet, stuff you can do in your own backyard!

1. Get outside and do the leaf pile thing.
Involves a little work, but totally worth it.

2. Head to a local pumpkin patch.
Each member of the family can pick their favorite, then hold a competition on who can design the scariest jack o’ lantern. See local patches ...

3. Head to a local apple orchard.
Multiple uses for delectable fall treats: candy apples, apple pie, cider … the list goes on. See local orchards ...

4. Make a bonfire and go s’mores crazy.
Fall nights are perfect for an early bonfire with friends, chocolate, and scary stories.

5. Visit a local haunted house or corn maze.

6. Flashlight tag!
Do kids still do this? If not, bring it back! Just back sure there’s nothing around the yard that could cause a dangerous fall. Oh, the memories …

7. Enjoy a leisurely bike ride around the Chip. Local trails ...

8. Attend a yard sale.
Or, if you’re up for a little fall cleaning, host one yourself.

9. Go to a football game.

10. Take a walk.
