“We seem to study the history of our world through art and war. Why is it that the overwhelming energies and money are drawn to the destruction of humanity? And, Art, the creation of love, art and communication is basically ignored! The creation of sculpture for me splits the air with beauty, movement, thought and joy. Windows, on the other hand tell a story of the present or the future, a certain era or a moment in time for my patron. Being an artist is a way of life, a blessing and occasionally harder than hell.” – The Artist

What we were thinking: “Normally, when we choose art for a cover, it is hanging up against a white wall in a gallery, or the artist brings the piece into our headquarters so we can properly light it and photograph it. The pieces are usually composed on an opaque surface like paper, canvas, wood etc. ... This piece, however, is stained glass and was hanging (away from a wall) in the Eau Claire Regional Arts Center gallery, and since it consists of translucent shapes of different colors – of glass – getting the shot was tricky. We tried different lighting techniques to get the colors to really pop without having random objects accidentally showing through in the background. Volume One has never featured a stained glass piece of artwork on the cover, so I hope it’s a very eye-catching and rewarding issue.” – V1 Designer Josh Smeltzer

Volume One finds it cover art in a number of ways, from local art shows to random emails to knowing someone who knows someone who knows a great artist. The art always originates from a current or former Chippewa Valley resident. If you'd like to submit cover art, send us a letter.
