“This piece was made specifically for a group show about unicorns.  I carved the figure from two pieces of wood, then staged and photographed it in a setting that I constructed out of wood, paper and paint.  It is an over-the-top idealistic fantasy land by design; an attempt to capture the possibility of childhood innocence in a perfected image.”

What we were thinking: “Steve Tomashek created this piece which we discovered at the Open Air Festival of the Arts in 2010.  We chose this piece because, quite frankly, things are so messed up in Wisconsin right now that we figured everyone could use an image of a miniature unicorn and rainbow to perhaps feel a little better about things. Steve has used a small area of focus to bring the viewers attention right on the unicorn and shrubbery in the foreground and to create more depth in the photo. By doing this the viewer is drawn in close to the little creature almost as if you are in his world. Also, the art is great for this particular time of year because it makes us feel as if these cold -25 degree days are soon to pass.” – V1 Designer Josh Smeltzer
