Despite the fact that the original Sound of Music first debuted on Broadway half a century ago, it is still herald as one of the most popular musicals of all time, and lucky for us, it’s coming to the Chippewa Valley. Based on Maria von Trapp’s memoir, it’s a story of a failed nun-turned governess to widowed naval captain George von Trapp and his seven children. Shenanigans and a love triangle ensue. This is all overshadowed by Nazis threatening to take over Austria on the eve of World War II, and the couple need to decide what to do with the family. Directed by Susan Weston, with musical direction from Tim Lutz, the original Rodgers and Hammerstein production is given new life with the talented group of performers at Menomonie Theater Guild. What’s interesting about this particular production is the connection between the two lead roles. Audric Buhr, the Memomonie High School choir director, is appearing as Captain Von Trapp, while Caitlin Lloyd, a former student of Buhr’s, is playing Maria. The show, which runs Feb. 24-March 6, will play at The Mabel Tainter and feature musical classics like My Favorite Things and Edelweiss.
