Save Time, Next Year
Chippewa Valley Theatre Guild offers stage-full of romance
Forbidden romance is on the agenda for the Chippewa Valley Theatre Guild’s production of Same Time, Next Year. Bernard Slade’s 1975 comedic play about a couple who meets at a California Inn in 1951 and continues annual romantic reunions regardless of each of their marriages to other people has entertained Broadway and film audiences alike with its two acclaimed productions. The play follows George and Doris over the course of 24 years of meetings, as their romantic bond allows for intimate yet endearingly quirky discussions of all facets of life, including birth, death, marital strains, and social changes. Nick Sirek and Sue Kelly, both with significant dramatic experience, play the leading roles of George and Doris. Veteran theatregoers will recognize Sirek from the lead role in Barefoot in the Park and supporting roles in Kiss Me Kate and Over the River and Through the Woods. He also directed the production of White Christmas last month. Kelly’s past experiences include roles in Legend of Sleepy Hollow, You Can’t Take it With You, Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding, Sylvia, and Lost in Yonkers. Same Time Next Year is sure to provide that oft-used but seldom perfected balance of romance, comedy, and controversy for Valentine’s Day.
