Formed from has-been transmission parts, a new sculpture by Steve Bateman stands 10 feet tall (no kidding) and weighs in at a half ton (we think). This work was commissioned by John and Marilyn Zmuda of Transmission Supply and Service, on Highway 93, to draw attention to their shop, support local artists, and bring a little fun to their workplace. Transmission Man has fulfilled his purpose, and continues to stop traffic and start up unique conversations between customers and employees. Zmuda (known recently for his duct tape car creation) approached Bateman about constructing a large metal man (perhaps based on his previous creations like the Garbage Swan at Banbury or Horse Man in the V1 office). Ominous in stature, Transmission Man stands proudly, greeting guests with metal coils for rippling quads, oil pan pecs, and quite literally, abs made of steel. When asked if we can expect to see more characters clanging around the Chippewa Valley, Steve Bateman simply replies, “Count on it.”
