Fiber Arts Festival to showcase 20 fiber artist/demonstrators

Just a couple of free wheelin’ fiber artists.

Until recently, the contemporary art world politely dismissed fiber art as “traditional,” “practical,” or “domestic” art. The Fiber Arts Festival is attacking this viewpoint, presenting work from a handful of local artists. The festival offers the unique opportunity to watch more than 20 fiber artists demonstrate their skills in a myriad of mediums, including loom work weaving, rug hooking and braiding, spinning, knitting, and more. This ain’t your grandmas knitting, either. Contemporary artists have pushed the old techniques in enticing directions, as evidenced by the variety and inventiveness of the pieces. Some artists, such as Clearwater Fiber Guild’s Ellen Nelson, Mary Gilbertson, and Kathy Leffingwell, will offer hands-on lessons and provide the equipment and supplies needed for making a small sample. Visitors are also welcome to bring along their own projects, either in progress or already completed, to participate in an idea exchange with others. Select artists will offer visitors the opportunity to order custom work, or will already have a sampling of their finished textiles available for purchase in the museum store. While you’re there, check out the museum’s new traveling exhibit, “Wrapped in Pride: Ghanaian Kente and African American Identity.”
