the Mike Rambo Project stages concert experience

Mitchell See |

Unlike most shows in which the headlining band is promoting a new CD, this event treats the release as secondary (it’s being given away for free!), an added bonus to a unique and eclectic package in an evening of entertainment. The performers are local band The Mike Rambo Project, UWEC a cappella group Fifth Element, and Hitide Lotide, a somber-sounding band from Milwaukee. The Mike Rambo Project headlines the evening with its new EP, Shine, in tow. The energetic, piano-driven band is headed by Rambo himself, whose lyrics have a twinge of Christian rock and the delivery will immediately make you think of David Grey. But the bands are just part of the package. They are integrating open canvases for patrons to paint during the performances, to be auctioned off later on. Adding another bit of interaction, they are encouraging attendants to wear white T-shirts that can be written on by other audience members, the open-ended intention being to boost interacting with each other. The interaction is not limited to the audience, either. Even though the three bands are going to play separate sets, they might collaborate and record the show for an upcoming live CD release. To say that the night’s plan is quirky is an understatement, and with so much going on it’s hard to decipher how the thin line between “awesome” and “awkward” will play out. Either way, it’s great that local musicians (Farms is likewise doing cool stuff) are continuing to experiment and create a whole experience to go with their sets.
