Releasing Wookiefoot

Minneapolis‘s psychedelic explosion to release album

Two dudes, three hats.

Wookiefoot, the Minneapolis band, the psychedelic circus, the artist collective and globe-trekking bliss junkies are currently on a CD release tour for their latest album, Be Fearless and Play. Charitable and philosophical Wookie leaders Mark Murphy (vocals, guitar, and keys) and JOJO (vocals) muddle Jamaican rhythms and funk beats into a high-energy phenomenon that derives from an improvisational recording process. According to the band’s website, Murphy produces in an unusual, even backwards way in which he writes and records at the same time. “I like to capture a feeling at its moment of creation. I think there’s a magic there, even if it’s not polished or rehearsed,” Murphy said. The final product returns a full-sized wall of sound garnished with horns, percussion, guitars, keys, and layers of vocals from Murphy, JOJO, and vocalist Aimee Willmoth. Joining the Wookiefoot community at this local show will be Eau Claire’s The Excellent Adventure, who have self-defined their sound as “the hum of your air conditioner garnished with a hint of Depeche Mode” and Eau Claire’s flavorful “acoustified/electrified feel good” EverGreen Grass Band as the openers. I forecast an evening of light spirituality, with occasional wisps of “did that just happen,” highs reaching into the headache/blackout range, no foreseeable lows, and an increased chance of dance/jam/funk-ability as the night progresses. Bring a parka.
