ANYONE WANNA PAY FOR THIS?
[Editor’s note: This letter’s writer, Magic Mama, is a succesful children’s performer, playing reasonably-paid gigs throughout the region.]
I just read your latest article [on the local kids’ music scene] and thought I’d mention a couple of things.
In the past year, the only “paid” gig I have had in Eau Claire proper was at a local coffee shop that comp'ed me $25 and a sandwich. I have to leave my own community to get paid. Most people seem to expect music to be free in this town. That seriously limits my options since I do not play bars (which would pay). I have traveled all over the country in the past year and am the sole provider for my household. Both of my kids home-school and we are growing much of our own food. While Eau Claire has been a fairly safe and friendly community for my kids, it is not a sustainable place for my business.
What can we all do to re-educate the community as to the true value of arts and entertainment? A group of parents in Altoona just presented the first annual “Taste of Harmony Fest” and had music and kids activities all day as a fundraiser to create a new community center. I know there are many more parents who are hungry for engaging music, art and activities that are not condescending and really support our collective transition into a new paradigm.

DISPATCHES FROM FRANCE
Hello [Volume One] Staff – Aug. 09
How flattered to learn I’m plastered all over central Eau Claire thanks to John Mogensen. But lo, many have been dealt a blow via sun, rain, snow, and sleet. Would it be presumptuous to ask John for a facelift? Perhaps a contest to vote on the “least faded Mona?” What does fading convey to the visitor about downtown?
Thanks, Mona
