Over 40 teams, from five different states, will be swarming Boyd Park on August 8 to compete in the 2009 U.S Midwest Kubb Championship. Kubb, the Swedish law game, played with wooden blocks and throwing pins, and originating from the Vikings, is coming to Eau Claire for its third consecutive year. First pitch starts at 9:30am and the festivities will conclude with the championship game around 5pm. All teams are guaranteed five best-of-three matches, and there will be 20 matches going on at a time, all of which are free to spectators. All ages and skill levels are welcome. A myriad of other Nordic activities are planned throughout the day, including food, music, a wood carving clinic from 11am-1pm, and a silent auction featuring two round-trip tickets to any Nordic capital city. All proceeds from the event will go to USA for UNHCR to provide survival kits for refugees from Darfur, Sudan, and the Eau Claire County Girl on the Run (a female empowerment program). Eric Anderson, the coordinator of the whole shindig, said, “There is a Swedish saying about Kubb. It goes, Kubb unites people and creates peace on Earth.” Anderson invites all to come down and check out the “kubbolution.”
