After Elizabeth Christianson-Steans, the lead singer of the band QuinnElizabeth, became a mom and started understanding the issues that face women in today’s society, she decided that she wanted to actually do something about it. Having already experienced being in charge of an event like this, Elizabeth was encouraged to hold this event called Women Rise Up along with Georgia Rasmussen, another student from UW-Stout. The goal of the event is to put women and women’s issues into the spotlight to educate the general public how to take action against women’s issues that are not often at the forefront of the public eye. The event will feature three musical acts – QuinnElizabeth, Sarah Pray, and Erika Wilder and seven speakers elaborating on different aspects of women’s issues. They hope that their music can inspire other women. Elizabeth explained that all of the bands are just “fighting for the same thing – just to be heard.” The proceeds will go towards Bridge to Hope, a women’s shelter in Menomonie, and The Interfaith Food Pantry. With the economy being as it is, Christianson-Steans pointed out the fact that the food pantry was receiving record numbers of people coming for their free meals because they don’t have money left over for food.
