Rosebuds + Megafaun

rockin’ bands from North Carolina rolling through town

Ian Jacoby |

Megafaun is perhaps best known these days (at least to the Chippewa Valley) as the Bon Iver-less part of former local band, DeYarmond Edison. That does these gentlemen a great disservice. Now on the verge of releasing their second album, Megafaun is poised to becoming one of the most blogged about bands of 2009. Their mix of rollicking, Appalachian-folk, thunderous stomps, and experimental sounds are both exhilarating and thought provoking. There is a depth to their fun, a method in their explosiveness. And as good as Megafaun is on recording, they’re that much better live. Yup, it’s scary. Rounding out the bill is fellow North Carolina group, and a fairly big one at that, The Rosebuds. Ivan Howard and Kelly Crisp, who formed the band in college, play something like fifty billion instruments. Well, maybe not fifty billion, but a quick list does include: organ, accordion, guitar, programming, drums, and vocals. The Rosebuds sound isn’t really conducive to 100 word descriptions, but here goes. Imagine dance rock that had been filtered through The Pixies, who had been living in the southeast for the past 20 years. There are synthesizers; frenetic energy and driving drums, but there are also acoustic guitars and thoughtful melodies. Don’t miss this show.
