Whether at the turn of the last century or today, springtime is a good time to tune up your bicycles and get the family outside for a ride. If you had lived in Eau Claire during the early years of the 20th century, the place to buy or repair your bike was James L. Lund’s shop. In this picture from the Chippewa Valley Museum, which was taken some time between 1901 and 1910, children and adults proudly show off their one-speed wonders in front of Lund’s business. According to old city directories, the shop was at various times located at 127 N. Barstow St., 312 Galloway St., 97 W. Grand Ave., and 210 Highland Ave. And while the flowered hat worn by the girl at the center of the picture is certainly stylish, we recommend that you and your kids wear helmets instead.
