Eau Claire police considering surveillance cameras?

Saw this on the AP news feed, and unless I’m too busy reading Twilight fan fiction blind, I haven’t seen it appear in local media. I excerpt-ize:

  • Eau Clarie's police chief says putting surveillance cameras on some city streets would help deter crime. But opponents don't like the thought of constantly being watched.
  • Chief Jerry Matysik says the cameras could be tried on Water Street, where officers are frequently called because of the number of bars. Matysik says having cameras in plain view could stop some disorderly conduct and fights. Read more.

The article even quotes Jack Gribble of Midwest Tattoo. And it says that Matysik “wants” the cameras installed by 2011 at a cost of $60,000. Really? Anyone else heard anything about this?
