A university-affiliated foundation will receive a $400,000 federal grant to help clean up the future site of an event and recreation complex on Menomonie Street. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced May 31 that the Blugold Real Estate Foundation will receive two Brownfield Cleanup Grants to remove contaminated soil at the former County Materials Corp. property between Menomonie Street and the Chippewa River. The property was part of a $10 million donation to the foundation in 2014 by UW-Eau Claire alums John and Carolyn Sonnentag. The university plans to eventually build a 130,000-square-foot major event center on the site while also partnering with the Eau Claire YMCA and Mayo Clinic Health System on an attached wellness, fitness, and aquatic center.
