University System Approves New UWEC Dorm

The UW System Board of Regents has given a thumbs up to UW-Eau Claire to build a new $35 million dorm on upper campus. The six-story residence hall, which has been designed to hold 432 students, is slated to be built on the site of basketball and tennis courts north of Towers Hall. According to a university press release, the plan next goes to the State Building Commission, which must approve the project and authorize the construction. If that final hurdle is cleared, construction is scheduled to begin next February with completion slated for August 2019. Other than Chancellors Hall, which opened in 2000, all of the university’s nine on-campus dorms date to the 1950s and ‘60s. The planned dorm, which hasn’t yet been named, will include four-student suites plus single- and double-room options. The project will be funded with student fees.
