Statewide Writing Contests Looking for Your Words

V1 Staff |

If you’ve got a short story or poem that you’re particularly proud of, Wisconsin People & Ideas magazine may have some cash, prizes, and even space in its pages for you. The Madison-based publication is accepting entries in its annual fiction and poetry contests between now and Dec. 1. The contests are open to all Wisconsin residents age 18 and older, and prizes include up to $500, publication in the magazine, the opportunity to read your work at the Wisconsin Book Festival in Madison, and one-week residencies at the Shake Rag Alley Center for the Arts in historic Mineral Point. Short stories should be between 2,000 and 5,000 words, and the entry fee is $15 for members of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts & Letters (which publishes the magazine) and $20 for nonmembers. Fiction writers may enter more than one story, but separate entry fees are required for each. Poets may enter up to three poems per submission and are allowed to make multiple submissions (although each submission must be accompanied by a separate entry fee of $8 for members and $10 for nonmembers). Entries can be submitted online or by mail. For full details, check out wisconsinacademy.org/content/writing-contests.
