Mike on the Mic

author Perry to get Actors Studio-style grilling

Tom Giffey |

One of the not-so-secret secrets to best-selling author Michael Perry’s success is that his talent as a writer is inextricably tied to his talent as a storyteller. Those who’ve read and loved his memoirs (which include Population 485, Truck: A Love Story, Coop, and Visiting Tom) but have never seen or heard the man spin a yarn in person are in for a treat, and fortunately it’s a treat they can enjoy close to home. (Perry’s books may make the New York Times lists, but he’s kept his roots firmly planted here in the Chippewa Valley.) On Dec. 7, fans will be able to hear from the volunteer fireman/musician/author/amateur pig farmer live in person at Menomonie’s historic Mabel Tainter Theater. Perry is kicking off a tour to promote his latest book, From the Top, a collection of essays written for Tent Show Radio, the nationally syndicated Wisconsin-based variety show he hosts. The Dec. 7 event is being billed as an Inside the Actors Studio-style conversation, with Wisconsin Public Radio producer Judith Siers-Poisson doing the probing instead of James Lipton. Expect thoughtful questions and humorous yet insightful anecdotes about everything from fathering to why you should have bacon in your investment portfolio. (We’d expect a pig farmer to suggest nothing less.) A $15 ticket includes a signed copy of Perry’s new book, while $30 will get you into a pre-show reception with Perry (as well as a signed book and primo seating). Come ready to relax, laugh, and bask in the talent of one of Wisconsin’s reigning literary lights.
