If you haven’t heard of Kubb, then you should probably educate yourself. The “Viking chess” game is one of the most popular lawn games in the Chippewa Valley, and its popularity is growing rapidly. In fact, the US National Kubb Championships are held annually right here in Eau Claire. And with the recent announcement by Menards that they’ll be carrying game sets, Kubb is poised to possibly sweep the nation – which is cool when the proverbial capitol is right here! Menards is currently selling the sets for $30 (and recently even offered a sale and $10 mail-in rebate that brought them down to just $5), and even though they aren’t regulation size or weight for tournament play (those sets are specially made and run in the $60-$80 range), this is a huge step for exposing this awesome pastime to the states. This is something everyone should check out. Visit WisconsinKubb.com for a rule explanation, and OldTimeGames.com for the regulation sets.
