National Geographic included a few Midwestern spots in its “9 spectacular state parks to visit this winter” roundup, with just one in Wisconsin cracking the list: Lake Wissota State Park.

While some gripe and groan their way through the cooler months, not everyone gets to enjoy the best of all four seasons the way Wisconsinites do. Plus, if you play your cards right (or go to the right park), you can do half a dozen activities in the same outdoor spot.

“Winter at northwestern Wisconsin’s Lake Wissota State Park is refreshingly inclusive,” National Geographic writes. “Groomed trails welcome skiers, snowshoers, snowmobilers and fat bikers of all abilities. At the same time, accessible fishing piers allow visitors who might otherwise be sidelined by snow and ice to go ice fishing.”

The park’s blurb – Lake Wissota State Park comes in at No. 4 on the list – goes on to mention hiking, camping, birding and even gives a shoutout to local candlelit outdoors events.
