If you haven’t rolled along Chippewa Falls’ Bridge Street in awhile, you may have missed the newest eatery on the bustling business street: House of Eggrolls. Now open at the former TemptAsians (504 N. Bridge St.), the Vue family may be new to the ownership world, but the eatery has been years in the making.
Kevin and MaiNhia Vue have worked in the corporate world for decades but have been yearning to enter the restaurant scene, and two years ago they began taking that dream seriously. Yet with startup costs and other roadblocks, the Vues put their heads down and kept grinding.
“Our business did not have any revenue for the banks to want to give us a business loan,” Kevin explained. “So we kept working and hoped to find a building that would have all the kitchen commercial appliances.” They found just such a spot in the building that TemptAsians (now located in Eau Claire) was selling.
Securing the building was just the start of the road to opening. Major renovations were made to the small-scale eatery over the past few months: the whole roof was replaced due to rot; the electrical panel needed to be brought up to code; and with hot Wisconsin summers and a building made mostly of metal, an AC unit was installed.
With a new paint job and signage to top off their remodeling efforts, a soft opening featuring only egg rolls was held Monday, June 3. The Vues rolled over 1,000 egg rolls for the big day – and sold out.
They continued their soft opening at the end of that week, offering Angel Wings and boba as part of their menu rollout. As of Wednesday, June 12, House of Eggrolls is offering their full menu featuring a mix of Thai and Hmong food.
Single food items like egg rolls, beef pho, fried rice, and more range from $2-$14 with combo meals also available, ranging from $15-$19. Beverages include Coca-Cola and Diet Coke, Mountain Due, bottled water, and several flavors of boba milk tea or boba slushy (Thai tea, matcha, brown sugar, etc.).
Kevin said the Angel Wings are likely the hardest item to make – all of their dishes and food are prepped and cooked fresh at House of Eggrolls – because they require deboning and stuffing, but they are also the item he recommends to first-timers. “When you bite into the wing, it is very unique and has a great taste,” he said. On cooler or rainy days, he recommends a bowl of hot pho.
Me? I’ll be taking advantage of their three-for-$5 deal on egg rolls and a brown sugar boba to go!
