Ralph’s Red Apple Grill
new Chippewa eatery latest to go ‘all local’
So it’s a Saturday night and you need a new place to eat. Ralph’s Red Apple Grill just opened up in Chippewa Falls so you give it a shot. You might walk in and think you see a homey version of an Applebees (maybe because “apple” is in the name?). But look closer.
What you’ll find is a commercial-size restaurant that keeps its head and heart in the local economy. Every item on Ralph’s menu is made partly or completely from ingredients raised, grown, or produced locally. Co-owner, Ralph Couey, works tirelessly traveling around the state to find the best local ingredients and is constantly thinking of ways to re-invent the menu along with his partners Dave and Cindy Welk. They work with local businesses such as Yellowstone Cheese and Crescent Meats in Cadott, La Grander’s Hillside Dairy in Stanley, and the North Hendren Dairy Co-op out of Willard.
Ralph also owns Connell’s Orchard – from which they harvest more than 100 acres of produce annually – as well as Connell’s Orchard Bakery and Ice Cream Shop located right in the heart of Chippewa Falls. Much of the orchard’s harvest is used in-house on their homemade pies, in their handmade ice cream, and as produce in their salads and main entrées. Also, all of their bread and bun items are baked fresh daily at the bakery. You can’t get much fresher than that.
The real draw, though, is their ice cream. Most commercial ice cream recipes call for a certain number of ounces of ingredients such as almonds and cherries in an Almond Cherry ice cream. But Connell’s orchard mixes up a whopping 1.5 pounds of ingredients in each batch of their ice cream, all ingredients grown locally and using only Wisconsin milk. No artificial colorings or flavors, except for vanilla, are used in the making of their 14 delicious flavors. Even the cookies, pie crumble topping, and brownies in their ice cream treats are made fresh at the bakery.
From their Leinie’s beer battered pickle spears, to their burgers, to their magnificent desserts, Ralph’s tries to weave the taste of Wisconsin through the entire menu. You are sure to enjoy their treats and atmosphere and become a regular diner.
