An Imminent Face Lift for Chippewa Falls Murals

The murals that run along River Street and the Wagner Street hill on Chippewa Falls’ west side – a landmark to some – could get a new paint job this summer or early next fall. The existing paint on the walls is chipping and peeling – it’s in pretty rough shape. “It looks like it has a disease,” Mayor Greg Hoffman told the Leader-Telegram recently. The Voyagers Community Learning Center is pushing for a clean update, which would take about nine weeks to pull off, as the murals are about 250 feet long and 15 feet tall in some places. The mural consists of various notable landmarks around Chippewa Falls and was originally painted by Jean Arneson and a group of students in 1992. Before that it was mostly covered in graffiti. Since the initial painting, it’s been updated at least twice, most recently in 2006. If the project is approved by Public Works, it’ll put the paint effort in the hands of middle school students from Chippewa Falls Middle School.
