Billboards on the chopping block

Eau Claire may be cutting down on its visual pollution a bit by tearing down two — possibly even four — billboard signs that stand on public land (so says the Leader-Telegram).

Two of these billboards, that currently dwell right in the downtown area, are expected to be torn down next summer, as their leases end June 30. Many agree with this decision, believing a city’s downtown should be free of such advertising. The fate of the other two signs – which currently reside on Menomonie Street – is still in question.

One such sign nestles itself right by the Chippewa River State Trail. If you’ve ever biked this trail, the looming sign is impossible to miss. Those who want the billboard removed from this area cite safety hazards as the reason. For a trail crossing that is already heavily trafficked, they argue, the sign serves as both a distraction and an obstruction to drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians. 

Supporters of the removal of these signs believe that, with them gone, there is more potential for land development. (If you remember, about five years ago, a sign was torn down to make more room for development in Phoenix Park.) Still others think that billboards on public lands spoil the city’s picturesque appeal.
