Well, Shakespeare would have defined a festival as a day of merry-making, complete with a feast suitable for a Queen. Although they can’t provide Renaissance-like festivities, a small group of students at UW-Eau Claire have been working hard to provide a convention style celebration of texts. English Festival is not only a week-long event allowing students to present scholarly and creative works, it also involves live music on the campus mall, an international poetry reading involving poetry being read in over 30 different languages (yes, UW-Eau Claire students are gifted), and an inspirational keynote speech from our artist in residence, the noted Hmong author, Kao Kalia Yang. Plus, they hold the Sigma Tau Delta (English Honor Society) children’s and young adult’s writing contest awards as well as host the Eau Claire School District Gifted and Talented Readings. We are a dedicated group of English majors who willingly spend hours outside of the classroom doing … you guessed it, English stuff. As a result, they’d love to see you on campus during the week of April 25-29. Hey, you might actually learn something, and have some fun while you’re at it. So, if you are interested, take some time to celebrate the written word. Look below for a complete listing of activities. Even if you aren’t a nerdy bookworm, they have something planned for everyone.
