Laarks Launch their Assault

Nick Meyer |

It’s been a long time coming, but the wait has now been validated. After a couple years of local shows and mini-tours from Eau Claire’s keyboard-fronted rock band Laarks (that’s two “A”s and no “THE”), they’re finally releasing a debut effort, appropriately titled “An Exaltation of Laarks.” Though the record is bursting with vital enthusiasm and serious energy, its champion is the subtle sonic details throughout, whether it’s Brian Moen’s intricate hi-hat work or sparse background parts from the whole band. However, front and center are crushing pop hooks delivered not only by the remarkably well-done vocals of Ian Jacoby, but by his pristine keyboard parts and Kyle Flater’s soaring guitar. The whole thing almost serves as a pop-rock antidote to much of Eau Claire’s popular folky sound as of late. Word has it the CD release shows on March 13 and March 14 – also starring extremely strong acts: The Daredevil Christopher Wright, Meridene, and The Small Cities – will see the band in top aural and visual form as they put on their best face for the party. Put it on your calendar.

My favorite track (of many) is this one, “All the Words You Can’t Say Right.” You can stream it right here:
