Bon Iver: The Big Show

So Monday night saw the big Bon Iver homecoming show that has literally gripped the headlines of local media as of late. More than 1,100 people packed into the State Theatre in downtown Eau Claire to hear what all the fuss has been about. Much-loved author Mike Perry opened the show with readings and musings on what it means to be from Wisconsin. His amazing introduction in front of the State’s massive red curtain eventually gave way to a spine-tingling hum from the band just behind – and as his final words echoed over and over throughout the theatre, the curtains opened and the band began. After they played much of their debut album, plus a couple of covers and most of their new EP, Blood Bank, many fans and newbies were simply awestruck – though many other longtime fans expressed wishes for something more special and local.  Some special guests, maybe an older tune, or even some horns like on the album. Regardless, general consensus was a that it was major success. Be sure to leave your comments on the event or on the phenomenon as a whole. A full photo set is coming later this week.

And this whole Bon Iver sensation has finally made other area media take notice of local music in a big way. Just some of the recent Bon Iver coverage here: The LT’s front page story from Sunday. The LT’s article the day after the big show.  TV-18’s most recent story and the one after Letterman on the band (you can watch recent video clips too.)
