Addiction, Complusion, and Cravings - The Biology of the Pursuit of Happiness
What do substance abuse, love, pathological gambling, obsessive shopping, and Internet addiction have in common? This program will explore the biological understanding of the commonly identified features of addiction such as genetic vulnerability, salience, reward, withdrawal, and relapse. We will apply these concepts to various behavioral addictions while looking at treatment strategies and results across compulsive behaviors.
At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
• Summarize the differences between addictive, impulsive, and compulsive behavior.
• Evaluate the various treatments for addictive behavior.
• Recognize the biological features of different addictive disorders.
• Incorporate biological findings regarding human instinctual drives into their understanding of addiction.
Cost: $199 standard, $349 if paid alongside other program (The Science of the Mind)
