Best Local Book Released In The Last Year

1st Place: Michael Perry, The Jesus Cow
2nd Place: Michael Perry, The Scavengers
3rd Place: Nickolas Butler, Beneath the Bonfire

Michael Perry was at it again in full force this year, with two entirely different novels being published. The Jesus Cow, his latest work of fiction, has taken folks by storm. The story centers around Harley Jackson and the chaos that follows when one of the calves on his farm is born with an image of Jesus Christ on the spots on its side. Perry’s other book, The Scavengers, is a dystopian young adult novel about Maggie, a girl on a mission to save her family. Acclaimed Chippewa Valley author Nickolas Butler released his second book, a collection of short stories called Beneath the Bonfire, which takes readers through a series of warm stories that have a subtle sorrow; making this an excellent follow-up to his breakout best-seller from last year, Shotgun Lovesongs. —Mike Seitz
