Best Sports/Recreation Event (Non-Run/Walk)

1st Place: Silver Mine Invitational
2nd Place: U.S. National Kubb Championship
3rd Place: Eau Claire Express Fourth of July

The No. 1 event in this category is knit into the Chippewa Valley’s cultural fabric as tightly as a ski cap. Since 1886 the Silver Mine Invitational ski jumping tournament has brought the brave and bold to rocket off a jump and through the frozen air in search of glory — and a safe landing. Besides watching top jumpers from around the world complete, fans enjoy food, music, games, and pond hockey at this two-day winter festival. Likewise, top competitors from the region, nation, and world are drawn to the annual U.S. National Kubb Championship in Eau Claire, the largest tourney for the Swedish lawn game outside of Europe. And for all-American fun, it’s hard to beat the Eau Claire Express Fourth of July festivities, which feature baseball followed by a fantastic fireworks display to mark the nation’s birthday. —Tom Giffey
