If you’re a reader (or even if you aren’t), you’ve undoubtedly heard of Chippewa Valley native Michael Perry, who has written several bestselling memoirs, including Population 485 and Visiting Tom, and has dominated this category for eight consecutive years. Perry has also written and recorded comedy albums, fronts a band called the Long Beds, and recently published a young adult novel, The Scavengers. Another local-author-made-good is Nickolas Butler, whose debut novel Shotgun Lovesongs made a nationwide splash early this year and is soon to be a Hollywood film. Coming in third is Max Garland, a professor of English at UW-Eau Claire. Garland, who will soon complete his two-year term as Wisconsin’s poet laureate, is the author of several books of poetry, and his work has been featured in numerous literary journals. –Mike Seitz
