Most Disappointing Failure in the Past Year

1st Place: Charly’s Market
2nd Place: EC Residential Snow Plowing
3rd Place: YMCA drops plan to build near Carson Park

Charly’s Market – may it rest in peace – also topped a list in our 2012 poll, but for a very different reason. Last year, voters celebrated the downtown grocery store’s opening as the Best Local Idea That Worked; this year, they’re mourning its closure as the Valley’s Most Disappointing Failure. The second-biggest local bummer is a perennial complaint – the city of Eau Claire’s “three inch” snow-plowing policy – which last winter was aggravated by the frequency and volume of snow. Finally, the Eau Claire YMCA’s decision to drop plans to build a new facility next to Carson Park and instead build on the edge of the city rubbed many folks the wrong way (although we’re not sure if voters were upset about the change in location or about how the Y folded in the face of criticism). –Tom Giffey
