Most Memorable Happening In The Past Year

1st Place: Wild police chase ends with suspect shot at Culver’s
2nd Place: Blugolds win NCAA hockey title
3rd Place: South Barstow rebuilt

The Chippewa Valley’s most memorable news event of the past year was also one of its scariest. Last Oct. 5, a burglary suspect, Christian A.N. Peterson of Wausau, fled police in Altoona and led them on two high-speed chases through Eau Claire which were punctuated by several hit-and-run crashes, a vehicle theft, and finally Peterson’s death when he was shot by an Eau Claire police officer while trying to steal a vehicle at gunpoint in the drive-through of Culver’s on Brackett Avenue. Fortunately, the past 12 months also brought some good news: In March, the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds men’s hockey team won the NCAA Division III national championship, while over the summer South Barstow Street was rebuilt, giving downtown Eau Claire’s main thoroughfare a needed facelift. –Tom Giffey
