Home Within provides international insight

Barbara Arnold

Home Within” is a 60-minute performance in which Syrian-Armenian visual artist Kevork Mourad creates charcoal and watercolor drawings in front of the audience while responding to the soulful live music played by Syrian composer and clarinetist Kinan Azmeh. The interactive event will be performed on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 7:30pm in the Jamf Theatre at the Pablo Center at the Confluence (128 Graham Ave., Eau Claire).

The artists’ collaboration is heart-felt. Both are immigrants to the United States from Syria. They met in Brooklyn, New York, where both now live. Together they create an “impressionistic reflection on the Syrian revolution and its aftermath.” According to Mourad, “rather than following a narrative, we document specific moments in Syria’ s recent history and reach into their emotional content in a semi-abstract way.”

Dedicated to the hundreds of thousands of Syrians who have died in the war, the performance is presented in memory of Dr. Michel Sultan, a dedicated physician beloved by his patients, who resettled in Eau Claire with his wife Cathy, his partner in a lifetime of adventures, and their two children, in 1984 after escaping the Lebanese Civil War. Tickets start at $25 plus fees and taxes, and are available online and at the box office.
