Chamber Orchestra Focuses on Mozart and Holst

Barbara Arnold

The Eau Claire Chamber Orchestra will perform “Saturday Evening,” the second concert of its 2019-20 season, at 7:30pm Saturday, Nov. 16, in the Jamf Theatre at the Pablo Center at the Confluence. Conducted by Music Director Frank A. Watkins, the program will focus on pieces by Austrian musical prodigy Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and English composer Gustav Holst, best known for his orchestral suite “The Planets.”

The orchestra will play Mozart’s famed Symphony No. 29 in A Major, which was written in 1774 after Mozart and his father returned from Vienna having failed to obtain a court appointment. Many consider this piece to be Mozart’s first symphonic composition in which he expresses himself as a mature composer.

Pianist Nicholas Phillips will perform Mozart’s prized Piano Concerto No. 27 in B Flat Major, which Mozart finished on January 5, 1791, three weeks before his 35th birthday and 11 months before his death. Holst’s Fugal Concerto Op. 40, No. 2 will feature flutist Jeanne Kolis and oboist Steven Majila.

Tickets are available at the door and online at www.pabloccenter.org. Adults are $29; those under 21 are $5. For more information, visit the ECCO on Facebook at facebook.com/eauclairechamberorchestra.
