With the stealth of the Greek soldiers who filled the belly of its legendary predecessor, Trojan Horse sneaked into our hearts this year, winning the Sculpture Tour Eau Claire’s People’s Choice Award. The looming equine, which has stood sentinel since the spring outside the Mayo Clinic Health System Pharmacy on East Madison Street, will become the latest piece from the Sculpture Tour to find a permanent home in Eau Claire. Each year, the Sculpture Tour buys the winning sculpture and donates it to the city. Last year’s winner, a statue of a hockey player titled Going for the Goal, was officially dedicated at the Hobbs Ice Center on Menomonie Street during an Oct. 22 ceremony at which this year’s winner was announced. “Trojan Horse is a magnificent piece – definitely a statement piece – and I’m sure the city will find a great permanent place for it,” said Julie Pangallo, the tour’s executive director. Trojan Horse was one of three works on this year’s tour created by Minnesota sculptor Dale Lewis. The 12-foot horse – which, Lewis quips, is “just small enough to clear overpasses and power lines” – was made from recycled steel computer door panels. This year the Sculpture Tour, which began in 2011, brought 32 works of art to the streets of the city.
