The Eau Claire City Council has voted to reduce Eau Claire Transit fares for low-income passengers starting this summer. Late last year, the council increased a single-trip cash bus fare from $1.50 to $1.75. Now, after a May 8 council vote, fares for low-income riders will drop down to $1.50 per trip. Furthermore, a $45 monthly pass will be available for low-income riders. Both changes will be effective July 1. In a resolution approving the fare cuts, the council said it “would like to make transit more accessible and affordable for low-income individuals and families and thereby encourage more low-income individuals to take the bus.” According to a city estimate, the fare changes will reduce city revenue by $5,500 to $7,000 through the rest of 2018.
