UrbanDictionary.com defines geek as “that kid you picked on in high school who is now your boss.” More commonly, the term refers to a technology expert or someone obsessed with a hobby or intellectual pursuit. Geeks are creators, not just of techie games or programs, but of all sorts of things. Bottom line: Geeks are the cool kids. It turns out Eau Claire is full of them and can now boast a campus convention to celebrate local geekdom. The first-ever GEEKcon takes place on the third floor of UW-Eau Claire’s Davies Student Center from 10am-5pm Saturday, Dec. 9. Students, faculty, staff, emeriti, and community creators are set to showcase their diverse talents, passions, and merchandise. A full slate of activities and panel discussions will cover topics including health, comic books, games, crafts, 3D printing, cosplay, podcasting, and more. “I wanted to create an event that would bring students, faculty, staff, and community members together in a way that hasn’t happened before – over truly shared interests and enthusiasm,” said Rob Mattison, University Learning and Technology staff member and organizer of the event. “Our ‘Power of AND’ is connecting with likeminded creators.” In addition to all-day video gaming rooms, McIntyre Library will host extended gaming time after the convention from 6-9 pm. TV 10 will take over Woodland Theatre for the event, showing classic student productions. Check off some holiday shopping as well, as local vendors will sell a variety of handcrafted merchandise. GEEKcon is sponsored by UWEC PRIDE and Learning & Technology Services at UW-Eau Claire.
