“I wanted to create a funny and paradoxical situation evocative of Midwestern culture. I decided on incorporating whitetail deer because hunting season has long been ingrained into the natural heritage of our area and was drawing increasingly closer. Throughout my creating process, I continually asked myself, how important is blaze orange to the hunter? Midwesterners have always identified the significance behind blaze orange. But how much significance does the color really have? By negating the deer’s natural camouflage with the obviousness of a blaze orange hat, I am making its presence obvious to hunters. But how would the hypothetical hunter react? Would he respect the idea that blaze orange means ‘don’t shoot,’ or would he take the shot anyway?”  – The Artist
