Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire – i.e., the place most of us still call “Luther Hospital” – can add another feather to its cap: It ranked as the fourth best hospital in Wisconsin in U.S. New & World Report’s annual list of American’s Best Hospitals. According to the magazine, Mayo’s Eau Claire branch was the best hospital in northwestern Wisconsin (although only 13 of the more than 100 hospitals in the state were actually ranked), was the 50th best hospital for urology in the nation and was cited for high performance in cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, orthopedics, and pulmonology. Meanwhile, the hospital’s parent facility – the legendary Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. – ranked as third best in the nation. Maybe we will have to start calling our local place “Mayo” after all.
