With two ballot referendums that could decide the fate of the Confluence Project approaching on April 1, a new committee has formed to educate voters and promote the project. Voices for Growth is a nonpartisan referendum action committee established to encourage Eau Claire County voters to vote “yes” on a referendum to pledge $3.5 million toward a new performing arts center as well as to promote a “no” vote on a City of Eau Claire referendum that would require voter approval anytime the city spends $1 million or more on an art-related project. The committee, comprised of local business, education, and community leaders, was created to rally supporters of the proposed public-private multiuse project at the confluence of the Eau Claire and Chippewa rivers in downtown Eau Claire. The committee is chaired by James Hanke, who holds a master’s degree in Community and Economic Development from Penn State and has worked as a city planner, a regional planner, and is now manager for economic development and community services for a utility company. Voices for Growth is touting the Confluence Project as a way to boost jobs, increase city and county revenues, revitalize downtown, increase tourism, and promote education, the arts, and culture.
