“Two Penguins” by Kevin Szymanski
 Print on charcoal paper, 16” x 20”, 2013

Kevin Szymanski graduated from UWEC last spring where he earned his BFA degree in graphic design. He is an Eau Claire native who recently rediscovered an affinity for animal portraiture.

“My illustrations reflect a growing tendency for art (of all mediums) to be ‘over-produced’ in order to ‘appeal’ to as many people as possible. I want to explore the reasons and the results of this act. In order to do this, I diluted my subject matter in an attempt to appeal to the masses. I ‘plasticized’ the penguins so they are nothing more than symbols of penguins. I simplified their confusing habitat so the viewer can comprehend it at a glance. The Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black color scheme has a similar effect as a neon sign and adds a much needed ‘pop’ to these otherwise mundane birds. On the other hand, I greatly enjoy creating portraits of interesting creatures.” – The Artist
