About 15 months ago when we announced we were moving our office and store to our current spot on North Dewey Street, we had a lot of people say things like, “Oh, a little off the beaten path, eh?” Sure, maybe a little. But we also saw enormous potential in the spot – beyond just the gorgeous old building we were moving into. We saw some interesting spaces around us. We saw a bustling state bike trail just a few feet from our building. We saw plentiful street parking and an increasingly busy Galloway Street bringing hundreds of cars right by our door every day. And now, we’ve seen a creative little café open just up the block where Brent Douglas used to be – in one of those same interesting spaces around us. We had an article in our last issue about The District Co. – a tech-savvy café and coffee shop offering ready-to-go sandwiches and salads, a few baked goods, a clever array of craft sodas, and more. It’s a fun spot. But what’s most exciting to me is the collaborative energy of any neighbor businesses and organizations working together but independently to create a sense of place around them. Building neighborhoods and street life. Creating, if you will, a district. This is how things start, how you get a foothold. And over here on the corner of Dewey and Galloway, I can feel the future.
